SYDNEY, WE LOVED YOU!!!

____________________________________________________________________

In 2005, the IVE organized a group of young people to go on pilgrimage through Italy and into Germany for WYD in Cologne. We had a group of about 150 youth (including about 50 priests, seminarians and sisters!), and once we arrived in Cologne, we stayed with several hundred other young folks (again including priests, seminarians and religious) from other IVE groups from countries as different as Argentina, Iceland, the Ukraine, Egypt and the Philippines. WYD is an incredible experience as it is—being surrounded by hundreds of thousands of other young Catholics—but it was wonderful to have a more extended visit with young people from all the countries where the IVE has a presence.

For WYD 2008 in Sydney, we will be organizing a similar 20-day trip that will begin with a pilgrimage to the Spanish missions of California (along with various other activities) and and will then fly to Sydney for an 11-day visit there. The group we’re bringing will be even bigger (God willing) than the one we organized for WYD 2005, and it will be an incredible time. Its true that plane tickets to Australia aren’t cheap, but we’re used to working on a shoestring budget (of course, this means not sleeping in hotels or eating in restaurants, etc), and so we can pretty much guarantee that our trip will be less expensive than just about anything comparable that you’d be able to find anywhere else--the total cost for the 20 days is $2700 including the domestic flights (compare that with anything else out there!). Please note that in order to accompany us on this pilgrimage, you must confirm your participation ASAP! To get all the details on the trip, or for fundraising ideas (many of the people going are getting help from benefactors), or if you have any questions, please contact us at wyd@ive.org. We hope to see you there!

Here is the general itinerary:

On Friday, July 4th , 2008 (Independence Day), different groups from New York, Washington D.C., Phoenix AZ, Philadelphia, and California, will be arriving at the meeting point which will be held at Our Lady of Peace Shrine in Santa Clara, CA. The following day, Saturday, July 5th, 2008, the pilgrimage will begin by bus and will go until Wednesday, July 9th, 2008. Then on Wednesday, July 9th, 2008, the first group will depart from Los Angeles International airport (LAX) to Sydney, Australia (SYD). The second group will depart the following day, Thursday, July 10th, 2008, from the same airport. The pilgrimage in Sydney, Australia will begin on Friday, July 11th, 2008, and end on Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008. Below is a more detailed outline of the trip.

God and Intelligence
right

In this book, Fulton Sheen addresses what G. K. Chesterton called “the most tremendous question in the world; perhaps the only question in the world:” how man, through the power of reason, can know the nature of God. Tracing the course of philosophy from the Middle Ages to modern times, he shows Thomistic realism to be an adequate response to modern ideals. Emphasizing reason as a way of attaining knowledge of God, Bishop Sheen identifies the current age of agnosticism with its simultaneous distrust of reason. In a lucid tone, he analyzes the modern attack on intelligence, while presenting Scholastic philosophy as the solution to modern problems. Bishop Sheen succeeds in actualizing St. Thomas to such a degree that he ends up proving that Scholastic philosophy speaks to the world today as freshly as it did to the world of the 13th century.

IVE Press

This is one of the most enduring works by Servant of God Fulton J. Sheen—one of the great Catholic writers, apologists and prelates of the 20th Century. It is being published again by the IVE Press to re-awaken the Catholic understanding of the Holy Mass as the Sacrifice of Calvary renewed, re-enacted, re-presented for our salvation. Calvary is one with the Mass, and the Mass is one with Calvary.
