Guyana: August, 2010

The Institute of the Incarnate Word's Province of the Immaculate Conception consists of three countries: the United States, Canada, and Guyana. Guyana—which is the only English-speaking country in South America—is located in northern South America between Venezuela, Brazil, and Suriname. It is an extremely poor country, and the IVE has two missions ministering to the native peoples—in addition to attending to the people's spiritual and sacramental needs, we have a feeding program for children and have built a dormitory for boys who would otherwise not be able to go to school (because of how far they live from town).

Every August, several IVE priests and seminarians and laypeople from the United States travel to our missions in Guyana for a 18-day mission trip. This year the trip will be organized around two one-week missions in different locations, with a few days at the beginning of the trip and between the missions. The group, which will consist of IVE priests, seminarians, and sisters in addition to the lay volunteers (both men and women), will fly from New York City to Georgetown, Guyana, and then travel up the Moruca River to the IVE’s two missions in Charity and Santa Rosa. Because of the extremely small number of priests in Guyana, the parishes are huge, and traveling is very slow because of the rugged terrain—it can take several days traveling by small boat to visit the villages on the outskirts of our parishes! Therefore, in addition to organizing outreach mission activities close to our churches, we will travel to one or more of the farther villages—many of which have kept the faith as best they can despite often not having seen a priest in several decades—to organize oratories for children, to do a period of intensive catechesis and evangelization, to help the priests prepare children for baptism and couples for marriage (these sacraments will administered at the end of the mission), to distribute religious materials and to train people in the village to continue classes of catechesis. This is a wonderful opportunity, not just for those who are discerning priestly or religious vocations, but for anyone who feels called to serve the Church in Her missions.

There will be lots to do, but it will also be a time of spiritual growth: the center of each day will be the celebration of Holy Mass, and all the missionaries will have the opportunity to spend an hour in Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament each day. To request more information or register for the mission trip, please e-mail us. Come join us for this missionary adventure!

COST: Around $700 (the cost of the the round-trip airfare from Washington DC or NYC plus a few extra dollars just in case—there are no other costs). The minimum age for this trip is 18 years old. NOTE: The sooner you confirm a place, the sooner you get your ticket, and the cheaper the flight is!

God and Intelligence
right

In this book, Fulton Sheen addresses what G. K. Chesterton called “the most tremendous question in the world; perhaps the only question in the world:” how man, through the power of reason, can know the nature of God. Tracing the course of philosophy from the Middle Ages to modern times, he shows Thomistic realism to be an adequate response to modern ideals. Emphasizing reason as a way of attaining knowledge of God, Bishop Sheen identifies the current age of agnosticism with its simultaneous distrust of reason. In a lucid tone, he analyzes the modern attack on intelligence, while presenting Scholastic philosophy as the solution to modern problems. Bishop Sheen succeeds in actualizing St. Thomas to such a degree that he ends up proving that Scholastic philosophy speaks to the world today as freshly as it did to the world of the 13th century.

This is one of the most enduring works by Servant of God Fulton J. Sheen—one of the great Catholic writers, apologists and prelates of the 20th Century. It is being published again by the IVE Press to re-awaken the Catholic understanding of the Holy Mass as the Sacrifice of Calvary renewed, re-enacted, re-presented for our salvation. Calvary is one with the Mass, and the Mass is one with Calvary.
